Here are some of the modalities that may be used in your session:

Swedish Massage

This type of therapy is what many people are most familiar with as the basis for massage. Classical Swedish sessions are often relaxing, can increase circulation, lower levels of stiffness in the body and joints, and increase feelings of restfulness. The traditional Swedish form includes long gliding strokes, kneading, percussion, friction, and joint mobilizations.  This results in more range, ease, and quality of motion in the body, movement of fluids, and deep relaxation.

Myofascial Massage

Because it is constantly regenerating and surrounds and penetrates the muscles, fascia has a great influence on your posture and the level of comfort that you feel in your posture. Although many consider myofascial massage to be "deep tissue," that is not always the case. This type of therapy is designed to address imbalance in the integrated connective tissue and musculature throughout the body. The strokes are typically firmer, slower, and target muscles with great specificity, resulting in improved structural alignment and functional mobility.  Kate might guide you through some accompanying movements while you are on the table. Your assistance in movement and your feedback while on the table will greatly increase the benefits of this type of bodywork.

Assisted Stretching

This work is useful as both an assessment tool for the therapist and as instruction for the client.  Stretching can be added to the start of a session or be booked as a stand-alone session.  For these sessions, the client typically wears athletic clothing and the stretching is often augmented with the use of straps, trigger point balls or yoga blocks.  Kate will guide you through some movements and often call for breath and resistance to get deeper results.  With assistance, deep stretches can be achieved.  Regular assisted stretching increases flexibility, which can improve balance and mobility as well as encourage ease in the body.

Oncology Massage

It is recommended that patients who have/had cancer see a massage practitioner who can safely work with their particular needs. Kate has worked as a massage therapist in the infusion clinic at the University of North Carolina Cancer Hospital.  In many cases, she can safely work with clients who have had surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments.  If you are or have been an oncology patient, please make a note of that when you book your appointment.  Kate will contact you to learn more about your health history, your particular needs, and to discuss whether massage will be safe and efficacious for you.

Lymphatic Drainage

This gentle work helps move lymphatic fluid through the vessels, promoting a heatlhy immune system, increased circulation, and reducuction in swelling due to surgery, injury and/or reduced activity.

Energy Balancing

Energy balancing is typically touch that is very gentle, still, and meant to stimulate awareness, relaxation and focus. This occurs through placing the hands on the body in a position that is most comfortable to the client.  Energy balancing is a great approach when other modes of massage are contraindicated.  Energy balancing techniques typically consist of simple, still, hand holds in strategic locations on the body. While the touch may be subtle in nature, it can create a powerful shift in the autonomic nervous system resulting in deep relaxation, reduced anxiety, and lasting stress relief.
